Why Your Barn May Need A Barn-wide Nervous System Reset

You know that feeling when your barn no longer feels so fun? When the mood feels off? When the people and horses don’t look relaxed, and the riding isn’t that inspiring anymore? You go to the barn, and the horses seem upset and uncomfortable, and you are there because you should be more than because you want to be?

Sometimes the horses get worried, anxious or upset first. Perhaps there has been some shift in their herd dynamics. Perhaps one dysregulated horse has upset the others. Then you go to ride your horse, and he seems cranky, so he makes you cranky too, and everything at the stable seems a little less fun.

Other times, everyone, including the horses, is just a little worn out and a little worn down. Everyone is burning out.

That’s when you know it would be a good time for a barn-wide nervous system reset. We may not realize it, but our moods affect others and our horses. Sometimes we get so absorbed in our competitions, our schedules, our training, our busy, harried lives that we don’t notice the shift in the overall mood at the barn. Someone doesn’t smile back, a horse gets slapped, a comment is taken the wrong way.

Once one bad mood enters the stable, the whole place can become dysregulated. That’s why a whole barn-wide nervous system reset is helpful, one where each being is carefully considered. Where peace is restored all across the board, and there is a big collective sigh.

It’s time to “debitch the barn”. That’s where the Two Step Way can help.

What A Barn-wide Debitching (read nervous system reset) Entails

First, I do some gentle meditation exercises with the horse owners and handlers. We work together to get all the humans present, in their right brain and well-regulated. I help them leave their worries and stress behind. We work to enter a wide awareness mindset that will help them see their horse better.

Next I do 20-minute independent sessions with each owner and their horse to help the owner learn to see their horse more deeply and to connect better with him. These sessions help the horses relax, show us what is on their minds, and, over time, reset their nervous systems if they are dysregulated.

The overall feeling upon completion is a barn-wide peace for both the horses and the handlers. Those smiles returned, those almond eyes restored, those gentle sighs heard, that lovely connection flowing; that’s when I label a barn “certified debitched”.

You don’t have to wait for the vibe to get bad. You could just choose to make it really peaceful with a barn-wide nervous system reset the Two Step Way.

These barn-wide nervous system resets are highly beneficial for competition barns, as they reduce stress and increase relaxation and connection.
